SALT LAKE CITY — A 32-year-old man who admitted to stealing merchandise from the Outdoor Retailers Convention after it had closed for the night was charged with theft Thursday.
Charges filed in the 3rd District Court state the man stole more than $3,000 in merchandise from the display booths of three different vendors.
The man stayed in the Salt Palace convention hall after the convention had closed for the night on Jan. 21 and filled a duffel bag and backpack with sporting goods and clothing, charges state.
As he left the convention hall, he was stopped by a security guard and later confronted by police.
He's charged with theft, a third-degree felony, for stealing more than $1,500 of property; theft, a class A misdemeanor for stealing more than $500 of property; and theft, a class B misdemeanor for stealing less than $500 of property.
If convicted of the felony, he could be fined $5,000 and be sentenced to 5 years in prison.
