SANDY —- Sandy police say tips from the public led to the arrest of a suspected jewelry robber.

About 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, a man walked into Fred Meyer Jewelry in the South Towne Mall, 10450 S. State, and asked to look at several pieces of jewelry, said Sandy Police Sgt. Troy Arnold.

As the store employee took several items out of a display case, the man grabbed one of the pieces of jewelry from her hand and ran, Arnold said.

A gun dropped out of the man's waistband as he ran out of the store. Detectives recovered the weapon and discovered that it was a pellet gun, he said.

The man was described as a white, in his early 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing tan pants, a Carhartt style brown jacket, and a black hat with flaps that covered his ears. He was also wearing a camouflage backpack, Arnold said.

Thursday evening Sandy police issued a news release saying tips from people who saw media coverage led them to arrest 18-year-old Christian Harned. Tipsters told police Harned frequented the Salt Lake City library and that's where officers found him and subsequently arrested him.

Detectives recovered the stolen item. They say Harned is from Oklahoma and was homeless at the time of his arrest.
