SANDY -- A 2-year-old Sandy girl was killed Tuesday evening when her mother accidentally ran over her in the driveway.

Police Sgt. Troy Arnold said the 8 p.m. incident near 9400 South and 500 West remains under investigation, but it appears it is nothing but than a "tragic and unfortunate accident."

Officers first got the call at 8 p.m. Arnold said the mother was moving the van in the home's driveway and was pulling the vehicle forward when her daughter was struck. Another adult and other children were in the home at the time.

"This is a sad situation for the family involved," he said. "Obviously, the child got out of the home undetected."

Paramedics began trying to resuscitate the girl as soon as they arrived. Their efforts, however, failed.

The girl's name has not been released.
