LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- A new report from the Bear River Health Department says that more stores are complying with state law not to sell tobacco to minors.
Out of 307 checks done by the agency between June 2006 and this month in Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties, only 13 sales were made to the department's underage buyers. That's a 96 percent compliance rate and is up from 92 percent last year.
Compliance checks are conducted up to four times a year at businesses that sell tobacco products. The purpose of the checks is to monitor store compliance in an effort to reduce sales to underage youth.
