BYU Investigates Leak of Mayor's Grades

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Brigham Young University is trying to determine how copies of grades earned by Mayor Lewis Billings long ago were leaked to news organizations -- contradicting campaign accounts about his education.

Other copies of the mayor's transcripts were left outside City Hall entrances one day last month for anyone to inspect.

The mayor's challenger in Tuesday's election, Dave Bailey, denies any involvement and is calling for any witnesses to come forward.

A newspaper is reporting that B-Y-U's Honor Code Office interviewed one student employee and volunteer for the Bailey campaign.

Bailey acknowledged a BYU student on his campaign was questioned but told the Deseret Morning News the person was innocent.

The mayor's reports indicate he was a lackluster freshman during a 1974 fall semester before withdrawing from BYU, and that he wasn't studying business, contradicting a campaign biography.
