SALEM -- A swimming advisory was issued for Salem Pond after testing of the water indicates it is unsafe for swimming, deep wading, and ingesting due to bacterial contamination.

The beach remains open and the city says fish at the pond are safe to eat, but suggest you wash your hands after handling the fish and lake water to reduce any risk.

Samples are being taken regularly by the city, which says the advisory will be removed when the pond water meets code five days in a row.

This advisory comes during the city's celebration, Salem Days, which runs from August 6-14.
