PROVO, Utah (AP) -- With the help of some Brigham Young University students, the Utah Transit Authority is studying how to provide wireless Internet on mass transit systems.
Ten BYU students spent four months riding TRAX trains through Salt Lake City, looking for ways to created a "mesh" network that connects riders to wireless portals on a moving train.
Students earned school credit for the "meshnet" project. They also got free bus passes from UTA and equipment from Parvus, a high-tech communications company.
Providing Internet service isn't a high priority for UTA, but engineers say they information is valuable. They also say they've not tapped into student research before -- but should.
Engineer Abraham Kololli says there are lots of "smart students" on the Wasatch Front.
