(KSL News) -- 450 Utah National Guardsmen are a step closer to being deployed to Iraq.

As Eyewitness News first reported last month, the guardsmen have been told to prepare for active duty in Southern Iraq.

The 145th now has been given an alert order, and an actual mobilization order is expected in the next few days.

Utah Guardsmen Told to Prepare for Active Duty

Major Hank McIntire, with the Utah National Guard, said, "We knew that their number would be coming up in the next little while, and so this is something that is not totally unexpected. And as a guard member you are always prepared to deploy and to serve."

The guard unit has members based in Logan, Camp Williams, Spanish Fork and Manti. Their deployment is expected to begin in July and last for one year.
