According to Lt. Mark Scharman of the Salt Lake City Police Department, Kennard Baker walked up to a taco stand in a Laundromat parking lot at 910 W. North Temple just after 5 p.m. and asked the man working at the stand where he was from.

Police say as the man began to respond, Baker pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the right side of his chest.

Baker took off on foot, but officers caught up with him about a block south of the crime scene. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

The victim was taken to Intermountain Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

Scharman says Baker kept making "outlandish" comments about his motive, leading investigators to believe he has mental issues.
