LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- The Cache County Council will sponsor a multimillion dollar canal project aimed at restoring irrigation water to shareholders adversely affected by a canal breach in Logan last year.
On an unanimous vote Tuesday, the council signed on to partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service to implement the final project, once its selected. Five proposals are being considered.
Last July, a fatal landslide and accompanying canal breachforced some shareholders to get irrigation water through a series of temporary fixes.
More than $19 million in federal funds are available for a permanent solution.
The money must be matched at 25 percent, but officials say no money will come from county coffers. They say they'll get funds from shareholders and municipalities.
