OREM -- Orem police arrested a suspected thief after he flagged down an officer to ask for directions.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, police say the man was inside the Maverik store at 800 N. 85 West in Orem Tuesday evening and asked an employee there if he could use the phone. The worker gave him a cordless phone, which the man claimed didn't work.

The employee then gave the man his personal cell phone and began helping another customer. The man left the store with both phones.

The Maverik employee called police. They found a piece of paper the phone thief had left behind. It had an address on it.

As an officer was en route to that address around 11:20 p.m., he was flagged down by a driver who asked for directions to that same location. The physical description of the man matched that of the phone thief.

Police found the phones and some marijuana inside the man's car and arrested the suspect, who is identified as John White.
