SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) -- Officials say a Utah Islamic Center fundraising dinner and auction netted about $100,000 toward a new mosque and school in the south Salt Lake Valley.
Center Chairman Nadeem Ahmed said the Sunday event put the fund at more than $300,000 toward the $600,000 to $900,000 cost of the land for the facility.
Center officials estimate that 25,000 Muslims live in Utah, mainly along the Wasatch Front.
Many currently worship in a rented spot in a strip mall in Sandy.
Ahmed says that in addition to a mosque, organizers envision a full-time elementary school, and an interfaith meeting hall open to all religions.
