FINISHING THE RACE — Sports aren’t always about winning, losing or hoisting a championship trophy.

Sometimes the greatest moments in sports are the perseverance shown by the last-place finisher.

Here are a few favorite moments from the weekend.

Idaho State hurdler finished the race

Bengals hurdler Shelby Erdahl didn’t win a Big Sky championship during last week’s conference meet.

But the 400-meter hurdles participant won the biggest prize of them all.

The ISU senior ruptured her Achilles’ tendon nearing the back stretch of the event, a shock that sent her to the ground. But she got up and finished the race, despite the excruciating pain she must have been in.

Her challenge gave Idaho State a point from the finals — and showed Erdahl’s tough, team-first mentality.

Not all champions win a medal. Idaho State fan or not, Shelby Erdahl is a champion.

Kyle Beckman explains soccer

Real Salt Lake snapped a two-game losing streak and a 231-minute scoreless streak with Saturday night’s 3-1 win at Sporting Kansas City.

What was the key to success? Team captain Kyle Beckerman explained the victory in pretty simple terms on the RSL postgame show.

You be you, Beckerman.

Baseball players know how to have fun

Washington star Bryce Harper has been at the forefront of the “make baseball fun again” movement.

Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips obviously agrees.

Phillips pulled the ol’ fake hidden ball trick on the Indians’ Juan Uribe during a game last Thursday, when Phillips ran over to tag out the slugger while running for second base.

But the Reds second baseman saw Uribe wasn’t paying close attention during Cleveland’s 7-2 win. So Phillips ran over without a ball in his glove and pretended to get the out.

Watch Uribe’s heart stop when he realizes he’s safe.
