SALT LAKE CITY — Two Utah baseball teams won with big boomers this weekend.

Here’s how they did it.

Utes pull win from USC series on Scaggari’s grand slam

Utah’s baseball team lost the first two of the week’s series at USC, but Cody Scaggari made sure it didn’t happen a third time.

Scaggari went 5-of-6 with a grand slam — one of three home runs by the Utes — to help Utah to a 14-8 win over the Trojans on Sunday afternoon.

Scaggari drove in six runs on the day, including his fifth-inning slam. Josh Rose and Dallas Carroll added a two-run homer apiece, and Josh Lapiana allowed four runs on 10 hits through 6 2/3 innings to earn his second win of the season.

Brinkerhoff, Wolverines walk off with win

Utah Valley was tied with Northern Colorado, 8-8, going into the final inning late Saturday night.

And then Craig Brinkerhoff walked up to the plate — and walked off with a win.

Brinkerhoff belted a three-run homer on the final pitch of the game in the bottom of the ninth to give UVU an 11-8 win over the Bears at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem.

Brinkerhoff’s rip to left center was the Wolverines’ second home run of the game, after Zac Willis belted one over the wall in the bottom of the second.

The Wolverines improved to 18-14 overall, including a 5-3 mark in WAC play while dropping Northern Colorado to 5-22 and winless in conference play.

Rockies out to hot start with Story

The big story of Major League Baseball in the opening weeks of 2016 has been the Colorado Rockies and rookie Travis Story.

Story is the first player in MLB history to hit seven home runs in the first six games of the season.
