'Tis the season to wear green and pinch people. Yes, some may consider St Patrick’s Day the most annoying holiday of the year, but others really embrace it. Do your friends love St. Patrick’s Day? If so, you may want to review the following tips to ensure that you’re not actually associating with leprechauns.

We’ve compiled a list that should help you identify certain leprechaun characteristics in your peers. If you find three or more of the following to be true of one of your associates, you may have cause for concern.

They eat green everything

The recent popularity of hard-pressed juices may make this one a little bit harder to spot, but for the leprechaun, green is the only way to go. Their main diet consists of vegetation, primarily leaves, but you may see them munching on these green items as well.

Just remember, the leprechauns were green before green was cool.

Their cupboards are full of Lucky Charms

They’re proud of the success of their own and do anything they can to support it. Lucky the Leprechaun is one of the best-known leprechauns of all-time, and you will rarely find a non-diabetic leprechaun who doesn’t have a box of Lucky Charms in his cupboard. Why? Well, because they’re magically delicious!

They only wear gold — a lot of it

Leprechauns want nothing to do with silver; gold is the only way to go. Why? They have gold for days. The leprechaun always gets the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and you know what they say: “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.”

They’re obsessed with Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s mascot is a leprechaun, and so naturally any true leprechaun is a “Fighting Irish” fan. They love the movie “Rudy,” they never miss a Notre Dame game on TV and they tap a sign before leaving home that says “Play Like A Champion Today.” If any of these things are true of your friends, you may have cause to wonder.

They have red hair

This is a very easy way to narrow down the playing field. While it is true that there are redheads who are not leprechauns, there are zero leprechauns that are not redheads. They are very sensitive to “ginger” jokes and are adamant that they do have souls.

They want to get rich quick

Leprechauns are always looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. They don’t have time for Dave Ramsey’s smart spending tips; they want money and they want it now. They play the lottery and can be frequently spotted visiting a local pawn shop with “golden” items they’ve collected from their grandma’s basement.

They are obsessed with shoes

Leprechauns historically worked making shoes for fairies, so naturally they know a good shoe when they see it. It is rumored than even the name leprechaun may have derived from a word meaning “shoemaker.” So next time your red-headed, short, elderly male friend suggests a trip to the shoe store, you may want to think again.

They are unusually short

Leprechauns are very small — more specifically, very small men with wrinkles, not unlike the Lollipop Guild in the Wizard of Oz. If you know any of these you may want to watch out.

April Fools comes early

One thing is for sure, leprechauns are pranksters. So when the entire month of March feels like a mix of Bill Murray's Groundhog Day and April Fool's Day... well... dead giveaway you've been hanging out with a leprechaun crowd.
