SPOOKSVILLE — Last week's article about family-friendly frightening films generated a lot of buzz from readers about their favorite family friendly Halloween movies. As such, here are three more that my readers picked out.

“The Watcher in the Woods”

In “The Watcher in the Woods,” the Curtis family relocates from America to a mansion in England. While there, they meet a woman named Mrs. Aylwood (played by the great Bette Davis) who lost her daughter, Karen, in the woods around the mansion 30 years ago.

Intrigued by the mystery of the woods, the Curtis girls begin to explore the woods and begin to be haunted by the ghost of Karen. “The Watcher in the Woods” is a Disney film and appropriate for most children, but still provides a few thrills and scares for everybody.

s“The Ghost and Mr. Chicken”

In “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken,” the great Don Knotts plays Luther Heggs, a typesetter desperate for his chance to be a real reporter. When the editor gives Heggs an opportunity to write a major story, Heggs jumps at the prospect.

The excitement of the responsibility soon turns into terror, however, as Heggs is assigned to stay in a house that is haunted. While only small children are likely to be scared during the course of the movie, everyone can enjoy Knotts' physical humor.

“Rear Window”

In another Alfred Hitchcock thriller, Jimmy Stewart plays L.B. Jeffries, a photojournalist who is confined to his apartment after breaking his leg. Lacking anything better to do, Jeffries begins to watch his neighbors out of his window. One of his neighbors is of particular interest after Jeffries notices that the man’s wife is no longer around.

Is Jeffries just imagining the scenario or is there something more sinister going on? “Rear Window” is another Hitchcock film that is high on suspense but lacks the gore and blood that so many other films resort to for thrills.
