SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge is approving a deal for an embattled Utah elected official to resign amid questions about his mental capacity.
Salt Lake County officials said Friday that Judge Bruce Lubeck signed the agreement giving county recorder Gary Ott a $35,000 severance. He will step down Aug. 1 and a replacement is expected within about six weeks.
The county reached the agreement with Ott's siblings, who are his legal guardians while he is treated at a medical facility.
County council members have raised concerns that he is being manipulated by his staff, but were legally unable to force him to resign.
A lawyer for Ott's family says they're relieved he can retire in privacy.
The 64-year-old was elected to a six-year term ending in 2020. His taxpayer-funded position pays about $150,000 annually.
