DETROIT (AP) — Tuition will increase by 3.8 percent -- or $13.19 per credit hour -- for in-state lower-division undergraduates at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Wayne State's Board of Governors approved the increase Friday as part of the school's $631 million operating budget for fiscal year 2017.
In-state upper-division undergraduates will see their tuition go up by 4.5 percent.
Wayne State says the average of the two rate increases is 4.1 percent, just under a 4.2 percent in-state cap instituted by the state Legislature. Schools that go over the cap could lose some state aid dollars.
Board of Governors Chair Gary Pollard said the "decision followed months of intensive discussion and careful reviews of the university's budget needs."
Financial aid at Wayne State will increase by 9.1 percent, or $6.4 million.
