LINDON — A veteran firefighter remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit Wednesday after an interior wall with steel doors collapsed on him while fighting a business fire on Tuesday.

Orem Fire Battalion Chief Layne Pace, 59, suffered serious shoulder, hip and pelvis injuries, according to Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez, but is expected to "make a full recovery."

Pace, a 34-year veteran with the department, was among the Orem, American Fork, Provo and Pleasant Grove firefighters who responded to Vivint Home Security, 500 S. 500 West, in Lindon.

He was unable to get out of the building on his own power after the wall fell on him and other firefighters had to rescue him, Martinez said.

The blaze caused extensive damage. An initial investigation pointed to heat tape used to keep the gutters from freezing that may have ignited foam-like material on the roof, according to investigators.

Damage to the building was estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
