EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University says the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded $6 million in grants to the East Lansing school for research and outreach programs to promote access to healthy food in the state.
The university said Wednesday that the foundation is making two grants over four years to its Center for Regional Food Systems.
Michigan State says one grant "focuses on expanding access to fresh food" by "advancing local food purchasing and supporting Michigan farmers." It encourages farm-to-school programs that bring produce and information from farms to schools, school districts and early childcare programs.
The university says another supports the Michigan Good Food Charter. Among its key goals is that 20 percent of the food consumed in Michigan will come from Michigan producers by 2020.
