Locals in NFL Free Agency: Rashid Shaheed has new 3-year deal with Super Bowl champs

AROUND THE SHIELD — The NFL free agency negotiating window opened Monday, and plenty of former Utah high school and college football standouts are already making moves.

Here's a look at some of the biggest moves, including a couple of former rivalry standouts who agreed to stay put on new contracts.

Raiders add former Utah kicker, UVU soccer star Matt Gay

Matt Gay is going to the autumn wind.The Las Vegas Raiders announced the signing of the former University of Utah kicker and Utah Valley men's soccer star Wednesday, adding the free agent from Orem to his sixth NFL team.Gay, 31, was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft and spent seven seasons with the Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and most recently the San Francisco 49ers.The former Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl honoree in 2021 converted 17-of-23 field-goal attempts (73.9%) for Washington and San Francisco last year, and all 26 of his extra-point attempts.

Rashid Shaheed adds shiny new deal with Super Bowl champs

Rashid Shaheed added a Super Bowl ring in his short time with Seattle, and now the Seahawks' dynamic wide receiver and return specialist has a shiny new deal to go with it.Seattle signed the former Weber State star to a new three-year, $51-million contract Monday, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.The deal included $34.7 million in guarantees, his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told the ESPN reporter.Shaheed was traded to the Seahawks from New Orleans midway through the 2026 season, and went on to earn Pro Bowl honors for the second time in his career.Over the past four seasons, he's emerged as one of the league's top deep threats, hauling in 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns on 153 passes while adding 192 rushing yards and a score. Shaheed scored three touchdowns on special teams with the Seahawks, including a 95-yard kickoff return in the divisional round against NFC West rival San Francisco.

Devin Lloyd joins Carolina after rookie option declined

Devin Lloyd is moving on from Jacksonville.The former University of Utah star safety agreed to a three-year deal worth #45 million with the Carolina Panthers, his agency Athletes First announced Monday night.The deal includes $25 million guaranteed, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garfolo added.The agreement moves Lloyd, 27, to his second NFL team after spending the past four seasons on his rookie contract with the Jaguars. He's coming off his best season yet, when he had five interceptions, a fumble recovery, seven pass breakups, 10 quarterback hits and 81 tackles en route to second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nomination.But the Jaguars declined to pick up his fifth-year option, per ESPN, sending the former 27th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft barreling toward free agency with plenty of suitors.

Allgeier runs to the desert

Tyler Allgeier will be sporting a different shade of red after spending the past four years in Atlanta.The former Falcons' fifth-round pick out of BYU has agreed to terms on a two-year, $12.25 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Allgeier rushed for 2,876 yards and 18 touchdowns in 67 games with the Falcons, and also caught 61 passes for 516 yards and two scores.In Arizona, he'll join a crowded backfield that includes James Conner, who recently signed to stay with the Cardinals, and 2024 third-round pick Trey Benson.

Tonga taps into Kansas City

Andy Reid is bolstering Kansas City's defensive line with another BYU addition.The Chiefs agreed to terms with former BYU defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, adding the former Granger High star on a three-year, $21 million contract that includes $14 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Tonga arrives on the banks of the Missouri river after a year in New England, where he started eight of 14 games for the Patriots and totaled 24 tackles, two tackles for loss and two passes defended en route to last year's Super Bowl.

Baltimore is 'Snoop city'

Tyler Huntley isn't going anywhere.The Ravens signed the veteran backup out of the University of Utah to a two-year deal worth up to $11 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Huntley, 28, started two games last season for the Ravens in relief of Lamar Jackson, completing 77.6% of his passes with a pair of touchdowns, and also ran for 151 yards.He's been in Baltimore for the better part of the past four years, when he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020. After his rookie contract expired, he spent time briefly with the Browns and Dolphins before returning to the Ravens by the end of training camp last year.

Chris Brooks returns to Green Bay

Former BYU running back Chris Brooks is foregoing his restricted free agency to return to Green Bay, his agency One West Sports Group announced.The former Cal transfer spent each of the past two seasons with the Packers after breaking into the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Miami Dolphins. In Green Bay, Brooks ran for 289 yards and a touchdown in 32 games as a reserve.He's set to make $4.85 million over the life of the deal, according to NBC Sports.

Taron Johnson makes move to Sin City

Former Weber State cornerback Taron Johnson will join the the Las Vegas Raiders via trade, the Associated Press reported Sunday.Johnson, 29, returns west in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, according to the AP. The Bills will also send a sixth-rounder to the Raiders in the trade first reported by NFL Network.The former fourth-round pick in 2018 had two years left on a three-year contract extension he signed in 2024 after earning second-team All-Pro honors. The Bills announced Friday they were releasing Johnson along with safety Taylor Rapp, wide receiver Curtis Samuel and cornerback Dane Jackson for salary cap purposes.Instead, Johnson will find a new home closer to home for the Sacramento, California, native.
