SANDY — A 16-year-old was killed in a stabbing near State Street and 9500 South late Friday night, according to police.

Police have also taken a juvenile into custody.

It was originally reported by the teen's school district that the altercation happened at a convenience store, but Sandy police clarified the location in a press release sent out Saturday.

Sandy officers were dispatched to a fight in progress Friday in the southwest parking lot of the Mountain America Expo Center, just before 9 p.m.

Police and the Sandy Fire Department arrived to find the teen stabbed. "He was transported to a local hospital where, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries," police said.

After talking with witnesses, police said they were able to identify and take into custody a juvenile in connection with the stabbing. No other details were released.

Jeff Haney, a spokesperson for Canyons School District, said the victim was a 16-year-old Jordan High School student.

"While this event did not happen at Jordan High, it still impacts the JHS community, which is known for its unity. Students at Jordan are an incredibly tight-knit group," Haney said. "It's devastating for a school community when a student is involved in a tragedy."

Bruce Eschler, principal of Jordan High School, sent out emails to parents informing them of the tragedy. He said the school will be open Saturday "for students who need assistance from our counselors, school psychologists and social workers."

No identities have been released.
