Editor's Note: Police incorrectly reported that the victim was 29 years old in initial reports. His age has been corrected to 37 years old.WEST JORDAN — A man was killed Friday morning after a large piece of steel fell on him at a construction site, police said.
The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. at SME Steel Contractors, Inc. at 5801 Wells Park Road, according to West Jordan police officer Scott List. Alfonso David-Grajeda, 37, was cutting a steel structure that was about 40-feet long and 10-feet wide, when part of the beam gave way and fell on him, List said.
The steel structure weighed between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds and crushed Grajeda. Fellow workers quickly removed the beam and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This appears to be just a simple accident," List said.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration will conduct an investigation.
SME Steel Contractors, Inc. is "one of the largest fabricators/erectors of structural steel in the United States with over 400,000 square feet of fabrication facilities," according to the company website.
