SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A judge ordered doctors to forcibly medicate a woman who is charged with kidnapping Elizabeth Smart in 2002.

Third District Judge Judith Atherton signed the order Friday. Wanda Barzee is being held at Utah State Hospital, where doctors believe her mental competence could be restored with medication.

Barzee's attorneys say they're preparing an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Utah Supreme Court has upheld the forced medication.

Smart was 14 when she was kidnapped from her bedroom in Salt Lake City. She was found in Sandy, a suburb, nine months later.

Brian David Mitchell is also charged in the case. He has been declared incompetent to stand trial.
