Sandra Yi reporting A man who is serving a murder sentence for killing his boss went before the parole board today. He wasn't supposed appear for another 11 years, but the board made the exception.
Jesus Hernandez was not supposed to have his first parole hearing until 2019, but he asked the board to hold one now because he wants to be transferred to a prison in Mexico.
Today, Hernandez tearfully expressed remorse for shooting and killing his boss, Joseph Crummy, back in 2004. "I lost my mind at that moment. I went to the car, grabbed the gun, loaded it and shot him. At that moment I lost control of myself and I wish I wouldn't. I have not only damaged his family, but my own," Hernandez said.
Hernandez has a wife and children in California, but he asked the board to send him to Mexico so that he can share his faith with his relatives there.
The victim's relatives, however, fear Hernandez won't serve any time back in Mexico, or that he may illegally return to the United States, so they asked the board to deny the request.
"I'm not full of hate, but I do feel like he needs to serve here where he committed the crime," Crummy's widow, Brenda, said.
Hernandez is serving a sentence of five years to life for Crummy's murder. He says he was frustrated and lost control because Crummy had not paid him for construction work he had done.
The board says it will take three to four weeks before it makes its decision.
