SALT LAKE CITY — Pumpkin growers from all over the state came together at Thanksgiving Point Saturday for the 9th annual Giant Pumpkin weigh-off.
The event is sponsored by the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers organization, and these folks really know how to grow them big. Tyler Quigley grew the winning pumpkin, which was hauled in from Mountain Green and weighed 1,454 pounds.
Other pumpkins ranged from 400 pounds to over a thousand. Quigley said he used lots of PEDs, or "pumpkin enhancing drugs," to grow so it so big.
So what do you do with a pumpkin that big?
"I haven't fully decided what I'm gonna do with this one," Quigley said. "I'll probably put it on display up at my kids elementary school in mountain green."
The Utah record is 1,600 pounds, grown by Quigley's neighbor last year. The world record was recorded in Wisconson a few years ago at 1,810 pounds.
