AMERICAN FORK -- A routine financial audit has turned into a full-fledged investigation after account anomalies were found in the budget of American Fork City.
The Utah County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the American Fork Police Department, took over the investigation on Feb 24, after American Fork City officials determined that it was necessary to involve authorities with the issue.
Officials are still determining the exact amount of money involved as information is gathered and reviewed. A review of financial and accounting records by the Utah County Sheriff's Office and American Fork Police Department is ongoing, and will require an extensive amount of time and research, according to officials. One employee of the city is currently on administrative leave, although a name has not been disclosed.

American Fork City made a statement, saying it will insist upon and assist in criminal prosecution if/when an occurrence of criminal wrongdoing has been determined.
No further information is being released by the city at this time.
