SALT LAKE CITY -- A new smartphone application is helping Utah commuters avoid headaches on the roadways.
The "UDOT Traffic" app was released Nov. 8 by the Utah Department of Transportation in an effort to consolidate information from UDOT's CommuterLink system for users on the go.
"The app is using all the best and most up-to-date information from our traffic operations center," UDOT spokeswoman Tania Mashburn said. "With all of the information available on our CommuterLink website, it is a great tool to use as you plan your trip."
The app relates current traffic conditions on freeways and major surface streets using Google Maps and UDOT's live traffic cameras, with updated views "every few minutes."
Current road weather conditions, construction projects and lists of accidents are also available on the app.
We don't want people using it while they're driving.

With Thursday's high winds, the app could be used to view wind speeds, accidents and road closures, according to Mashburn.
"We don't want people using it while they're driving," she said. "But they can check on the effects of the wind storm while planning their trip."
The free app has so far received positive reviews and is available for download in the iTunes Store and Android Market.
