THE GREAT OUTDOORS — Spring break time is just around the corner, and so is the pressure to go out and enjoy the time off from school.

Not everyone has the budget to make a trip to Disneyland or Florida, though. Big trips are fun, but not always feasible. So what can you do if you choose to stay home for spring break?

During the next week, we'll answer that question for each part of the state, starting with northern Utah.

Golden Spike National Historic Site ===================================

If your kids are a bit older and want to see part of Utah's history, taking them to the Golden Spike National Historic Site is a great choice. The Transcontinental Railroad was joined here, signaling the end of one of the greatest engineering achievements in modern human history.

Fish for rainbow trout at Flaming Gorge =======================================

There's an entire month's worth of activities to do at Flaming Gorge, but one that the entire family can get in on is the stellar rainbow trout fishing. Right as spring rolls around, the Gorge's regionally renowned rainbow trout come in close to shore to spawn.

These fish are big and aggressive, making for a fun fight on a spin, bait or fly rig.

The best places to fish as a family include Sheep Creek Bay on the western side of the lake, and Mustang Ridge and Sunny Cove on the eastern side.

Rock climbing and bouldering ============================

It's snowing now, but the weather is looking like it'll warm up a bit by this weekend and next week. If you're a bit more adventurous, you should go visit either Logan Canyon or the east bench of the Ogden area.

Logan Canyon is a great rock climbing destination with over 275 designated climbing routes, and 230 of those routes are bolt-protected sport climbs.

The climbs aren't for most beginners, with the majority ranging from a 5.10 - 5.12. There's also the opportunity to establish your own nonbolted routes on Logan Canyon's magnificent rock faces.

Down in Ogden, the bouldering options are nearly as plentiful. Bear House Mountain Guiding, the first climbing outfitter established in Ogden, can give you specific directions and tips on bouldering spots and routes for climbers of all ages and skill levels.

Remote, rugged camping

This trip isn't for the inexperienced outdoorsman. In one of the most remote, isolated areas of Utah, the Raft River Mountains rise out of the desert floor with peaks reaching over 10,000 feet in elevation.

At this time of year, the peaks are still capped with snow. However, the lower established Clear Creek Campground is usually accessible (although June to October are the recommended months for visiting.)

The Raft River Range is the kind of place you want to bring a spare tire and 72-hour kit, just in case something goes wrong. The area receives little traffic outside of hunting season, but it's perfect if you truly want to spend spring break away from the distractions of real life, albeit in a chilly environment this time of year.

Northern Utah is ripe with recreation opportunities, even with snow blocking access to the high country. Do you have a favorite spring break destination in Utah? Let us know in the comments.
