WEST VALLEY CITY — Two workers who were critically injured in a lightning strike Tuesday are now in stable condition and are expected to recover, according to a construction company spokesman.

The pair was injured about 8 a.m. at a job site near 3570 S. Market St. in what Layton Construction Company spokesman Alan Rindlisbacher said was a “highly unusual” lightning strike.

“Most of all we’re happy that the workers are in stable condition and it looks like they will recover,” Rindlisbacher said.

He said crews sometimes continue working through inclement weather. Lightning strikes during a snowstorm are highly uncommon, he added.

The two workers fell after the strike, but their harnesses caught them, Rindlisbacher said. Other workers at the site brought them down and rendered first aid. The two were then taken to a hospital, he said.

Investigators were still working to determine where the lightning struck, Rindlisbacher said. There was a lot of exposed steel in the area, as well as a crane, he said.
