ST. GEORGE — A 38-year-old man was struck by lightning at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George on Friday afternoon, officials confirmed.

The man was golfing on a part of the course called The Point just before 2 p.m. when the lightning struck, according to St. George City spokesman Marc Mortensen.

The man was golfing with four other people and members of the group immediately called 911, Mortensen said. The man was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center and then was taken by medical helicopter to Salt Lake City, according to St. George police spokeswoman Lona Trombley.

Immediately after the man was hit by the lightning, he was responsive and was talking, but his condition quickly deteriorated, Trombley said. Police and medical personnel responding to the scene had to perform CPR on the man.

Medical personnel at Dixie RMC were able to stabilize the man's condition, and he was in stable condition when he was transported, Trombley said. She did not release the man's name.

The man had been golfing at the fifth hole of the course, which is exposed and at a higher elevation than other parts of the course, Mortensen said. A mixture of snow and rain was coming down at the time of the lightning strike, he said.

Photos obtained from St. George News show the path the lightning took through the ground when the man was struck.

No other details about the incident were released.
