SALT LAKE CITY — Remains found at the property of a construction business in November were positively identified as a man who had been reported missing in 2012.

Salt Lake police said the remains were identified as Jose Ignacio Valdez-Guzman, who also went by the name “Nacho.” Valdez-Guzman was 35 when he was reported missing on June 29, 2012.

His remains were recovered on Nov. 19, after police had received a tip that a body had been buried on the property of Los Lobos Paving and Construction, located at 799 S. Chestnut St. The owner of that business, Carlos Trevizo, 56, was arrested after the body was recovered and later charged in 3rd District Court with killing Valdez-Guzman.

A witness told police he heard two or three gunshots and saw Valdez-Guzman on the ground after the man confronted Trevizo at the business, according to charging documents filed in December. The witness then told police he saw Valdez-Guzman attempt to get up when Trevizo got on top of him and stabbed him in the neck and then slit his throat.

Trevizo then spotted the witness and insisted on driving the witness home before telling the witness “that what he saw back on the lot is what happened to people who ‘steal’ or ‘snitch,’” according to the charging documents.

Trevizo was also charged with obstructing justice, a second-degree felony, tampering with a witness and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, both third-degree felonies.

A preliminary hearing for Trevizo was scheduled for April 10, according to court records.
