SANDY — What a way to end Region 7 play.

On the final full weekend of regular-season boys basketball, Jordan High’s region title hopes were on the line in its Region 7 finale Friday night.

Tied at 38-38 with only a few seconds remaining, the Beetdiggers made one final play.

Dyson Koehler scored 10 points, including the put-back bucket at the buzzer, as Jordan clinched at least a share of the Region 7 title with a 40-38 win Friday night over visiting Corner Canyon.

With the clock running down, Jordan point guard Joe Dumsa drove into the lane for the final shot. His attempt was blocked by Corner Canyon’s posts — but the loose ball fell right to Koehler, who picked it up and put the ball in the hoop at the buzzer for the win.

Chandler Dean led the Beetdiggers (14-9, 8-2 Region 7) with 12 points, and Utah State football signee Crew Wakley added six for Jordan.

Gabe Toombs had a game-high 17 points to lead Corner Canyon, which trailed 21-16 at halftime. Trace Ross added nine for the Chargers (12-10, 5-5 Region 7).

The Beetdiggers finish the regular season Tuesday at Wasatch Academy, the boarding school from Mount Pleasant that competes as a UHSAA independent in boys basketball.

Timpview, which beat Jordan twice during the regular season, closes the regular season Tuesday at Alta after a win over Cottonwood. A win by the Thunderbirds (16-6, 7-2 Region 7) will force a tie for the Region 7 title at 8-2 apiece in region play.

The UHSAA Class 5A state boys basketball tournament begins Feb. 26, with the top-two seeds from Region 7 both playing at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Timpview 87, Cottonwood 59 — At Cottonwood, BYU commit Hunter Erickson poured in 26 points with five 3-pointers to help the Thunderbirds roll past the Colts.

Nate Hansen added 16 points on four threes for Timpview, which got 11 points from Alrek Greenhaugh.

Preston Davis led Cottonwood with 15 points.

Brighton 65, Alta 51 — At Brighton, Jaden Brownell had 10 points in a balanced scoring effort to help the Hawks down rival Brighton in the other Region 7 game on Friday night.
