SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested for causing a public disturbance before a Bees baseball game Thursday, police said.
Herschel Stewart, 33, jumped out of a car at about 6:24 p.m. and began taking his clothes off outside of Smith’s Ballpark at 1300 S. West Temple, according to the Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan. A baseball game was scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.
The area was “very crowded” for the game, and children witnessed the incident, McGowan said.
Stewart threatened and cursed at people who passed him by while taking off his clothes, according to investigators. They said he was also walking in and out of traffic — almost getting hit — when officers arrived.
His girlfriend tried to get him to calm down, but he kept walking away from her, McGowan said. Stewart ingested alcohol or drugs prior to the incident to cause him to enter a state of excited delirium, according to the probable cause statement.
Officers restrained Stewart to keep him from returning to the road, and after he was cleared by medical personnel, he was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
