SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake elementary school teacher has been charged with sexually abusing four students.
James Roland Carter, 62, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with two counts of sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony, and two counts of lewdness involving a child, a class A misdemeanor.
Carter is a fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, 1090 S. Roberta St. He is accused of inappropriately touching four girls over their clothing during the 2013-14 school year.
Carter was placed on administrative leave when a complaint was filed with police, Salt Lake City School District spokesman Michael Williams said.
The school's principal has visited with at least some of the students since the complaint was filed, Williams said. The school district is not conducting an independent investigation as it awaits the outcome of the criminal investigation.
"We hope that we'll be able to get this resolved fairly quickly so that everyone can move on," Williams said.
A warrant for Carter's arrest was issued Wednesday with bail set at $30,000.
