SALT LAKE CITY — Since the first glass of carbonated water was invented in 1767, people around the world have loved soda.
Whether people call it soda, pop or tonic, there is a good chance they or someone they know serves it at every barbecue. Sugary carbonated drinks have become a staple in America for better or for worse, and it is for the worse according to several studies.
Americans drink 44 gallons of soda each year, according to The Wire.
Thrillist recently created a map to show which soda is the most popular or the most iconic in each state. Sprite was ranked as the carbonated beverage of choice for Utahns. Some of the other states were partial to drinks made inside their borders like California with their A&W Root Beer and Georgia with Coca Cola. There is even a Coca Cola museum in Atlanta.
Some of the drinks may be more obscure or unheard of for many Utahns like New Mexico’s Blue Sky drink and Flathead Lake, a gourmet soda that originated in Montana. Although many might not consider Kool-Aid a soda, it became Nebraska’s official state soft drink after it was invented there in 1927.
