SALT LAKE CITY — Was it a coincidence or a cleverly-timed hack? For days in downtown Salt Lake City, the time was 4:20.
Many commuters noticed last week that the giant arrowhead-shaped clock, the Olympic countdown clock for the 2002 games located on South Temple at the Arena TRAX station, was stuck on 4:20.
Marijuana enthusiasts use 4:20 as a counterculture code. In recent years, the date of 4/20, April 20, has become almost a holiday for those who smoke pot or push for its legalization.
The Utah Transit Authority couldn't confirm whether the clock had been hacked in honor of marijuana legalization in Colorado. The agency says the clock does sometimes stop and it could have been a coincidence. However, they are investigating.
The clock stopped most recently at 6:29, according to UTA. Officials with the transit authority are in contact with Seiko to identify the problem.
