ST. GEORGE — An Oklahoma man was killed Thursday when he attempted to cross I-15 and was hit by an SUV.

John Madison, 41, of Muskogee, Okla., was attempting to cross the freeway south of St. George about 1:40 p.m. when he either walked or ran in front of Toyota Highlander pulling a small trailer, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the Toyota attempted to swerve but hit the pedestrian, who struck his head on the SUV's windshield. Madison was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to UHP.

The accident partially closed the freeway while officers responded, UHP said.

UHP is investigating why Madison was on the freeway. The driver of the SUV cooperated fully in the investigation and was not impaired, officials said.
