PRICE — A man accused of robbing a grocery store at gunpoint last week left behind the demand note he used during the crime, which allowed police to identify him, according to charging documents filed Monday.
Domonic Mathew Martinez, 28, is charged in 7th District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, and one count of conspiracy, a second-degree felony.
Martinez — also known by the street names "Cancerous" or "Canceris" — walked into Smith's Food and Drug in Price just before 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 26, showed a handgun to a clerk and handed over a note that demanded money, charging documents state.
The clerk complied, giving Martinez an undisclosed amount of money, the charges state. Martinez left the store but forgot to take the demand note with him, investigators said.
Officers say they collected the forgotten scrap of paper and sent it to the state crime lab for testing.
"Lab personnel were able to identify three fingerprints matching (Martinez's prints)," charging documents state.
In an effort to track down Martinez, detectives began interviewing his friends and acquaintances in the Price area, including Jennifer Meradee Tryon.
During a Sunday interview with detectives, Tryon disclosed her "substantial involvement in the episode," according to Price Police Capt. Bill Barnes.
"She took Mr. Martinez to the (store), waited for him while he went inside, and then took him away from the location," Barnes said. "I'm not sure if she has benefited from (the alleged robbery). We have not recovered any money."
Tryon, 42, was booked into the Carbon County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and obstruction of justice. She is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
In addition to the new $100,000 warrant for his arrest, Martinez is considered a fugitive in several other incidents in Carbon County and elsewhere in Utah, Barnes said.
"We know he's armed and we believe he's dangerous," the captain said. "We believe he's a little desperate at this time. He certainly doesn't want to be taken into custody."
Martinez may be on the Wasatch Front now, and he knows police are looking for him, said Barnes, who called on Martinez to surrender peacefully.
"The smartest thing he could do right now is to man up, walk into the nearest police station and say, 'I'm wanted,'" the captain said.
