SALT LAKE CITY — With the recent addition of 130,000 pages from local and rural newspapers, the Utah Digital Newspapers archive now hosts 1.5 million pages of historic Utah newspapers.

Monday, the University of Utah announced the UDN added thousands of pages from four Utah rural newspapers and seven other newspapers to its already expansive archive. UDN was founded by the J. Willard Marriott Library at the U. of U. in 2002.

New additions to the library include pages from the Brigham City Bugler years 1891 to 1895, Gunnison Valley News from 1909 to 1935, Milford/Beaver County News years 1916 to 1946 and the Mt. Pleasant Pyramid from 1912 to 1950.

Funding for the expansion came from several museums and libraries throughout Utah, including the Utah State Library Division, Department of Heritage and Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Recently, the archive added the Vernal Express to its catalogue with financial help from the Uintah County Library System.

“Our patrons are thrilled to have online access to the Vernal Express. The investment we’ve made in the project has reaped great benefits and we hope to continue our support, bringing even more issues online,” said Sam Passey, director of the Uintah County Library System.

The public can access the UDN content on its website, digitalnewspapers.org.
