SMITHFIELD — Hunger Games may be dangerous in the book series, but students are harnessing their popularity for good with an annual food drive.

Classes at Sky View High School have been rebranded as districts and for each can of food students bring in they can give their team a better chance of winning. The games will be held at an assembly on Friday, the day "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is released in theaters.

“The kids are excited; everyone is just getting hyped up for it and it’s going to be a battle of the classes,” said student body president McKlayne Marshall.

Students can enter names into a "reaping bowl" for each can they bring to school. All of the cans will be placed into a cornucopia in the middle of the commons and names will be drawn to determine who will compete in the assembly.

The second film in the "Hunger Games" saga isn't due in theaters until November, but we finally have our first trailer of the highly anticipated sequel.

The school has been divided into four teams, with seniors competing as District 12, juniors as District 11, sophomores as District 10 and the faculty taking the role of the Capitol. The student body officers will play as the "Game Makers." The tagline for the event is "May the odds ever be in your flavor!"

McKlayne likes "The Hunger Games" and said because most of the student body has read the books and seen the movie they wanted to seize the opportunity to get students involved with helping others. All of the food will be donated to the food pantry in Cache Valley.

“In the past the highest amount of cans we’ve ever raised is about 2,800 cans, and I just feel like our student body can bring a lot more,” he said. “I’m excited to see how many they can bring in.”

Some of the games will be a surprise, but activities during the assembly will consist of things like four-way tug-of-war.
