RIVERTON — A man who tried to get his neighbor to make his dog stop barking was arrested for investigation of impersonating a police officer.

Police said Suleman Gowan went to a neighbor's house near 2500 West and 11800 South about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. He knocked on the door, claimed he was an undercover police officer and "demanded the neighbor's dog stop barking," a Salt Lake County Jail report states.

The dog owner, however, called real police after the man left. Police searched the area and found a dark-colored Dodge Charger matching the description of the man's vehicle.

While officers were investigating, they learned of a similar recent incident in South Jordan where a man in a dark Charger pulled over a motorist by flashing his headlights. He then claimed he was an undercover Murray police officer and told the driver to stop speeding, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

Gowan was arrested for investigation of two counts of impersonating a police officer.
