SALT LAKE CITY — The term "vexillology" isn't a word many have heard of before. It means the scholarly study of flags.
For the first time ever, members of the North American Vexillological Association are holding their 47th annual convention here in Utah.
Flag enthusiasts are here from the U.S. and Canada to talk about and examine flags of all types, some extremely rare, including a couple of United States flags; one with 48 stars, the other with 49.
John Hartviggsen is the secretary of the North American Vexillological Association.
"People are just very excited to see these flags because there are very few opportunities to get up close and actually see the fine stitching of the flags," Hartviggsen said.
The convention ends Sunday night.
