UTAH COUNTY — A 22-year-old man who fell over 40 feet in American Fork Canyon on Saturday is in serious condition. Crews responded to a call placed around 1:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred in American Fork Canyon in the Little Mill campground area. Lone Peak Fire Battalion Chief Joseph McRae said the man was conscious when paramedics arrived and was able to communicate with law enforcement.
"His injuries were serious. He had possible broken arms and possible hip, head and back injuries," McRae said.
Lone Peak law enforcement, along with members of Utah County Search and Rescue, were able to give the climber aid at the site of the fall and move him out of the canyon.
McRae said the man was climbing with his brother and a friend when the fall occurred. According to those present, the man was reaching to clip on a carabiner when he lost his footing and fell.
Paramedics initially planned on taking the man via AirMed to the University of Utah Hospital. After re-assessing the injuries, and at the request of the injured climber, they transported him via ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. He is currently in serious condition.
