LAYTON — An 8-year-old Layton boy followed a hunch that led to an act of heroism Wednesday. In fact, his mother says her grandmother is likely still alive because of what her son did.

"I was just playing with my friend, and I was like, ‘Wanna go see my grandma?' And he was like, ‘Yeah, sure,'" Kameron Batchelor said. "I just wanted to see her ‘cause I hardly ever get to see her."

Call it a hunch or divine intervention, but the timing couldn't have been better. Kameron's 85-year-old great-grandmother was alone inside her house and needed help.

"When we came in the driveway, we heard her say, ‘Help! Help!'" Kameron said.

The elderly woman was in the kitchen, saying she was going to pass out.

"She said that she was hanging onto the stove, but not for long," Kameron said.

The door was locked, so Kameron and his friend found another way in. They used garden tools to rip the screen on the kitchen window, and then used a bike to prop themselves up.

It's just amazing to me that he was able to stay calm and cool in the face of something that a lot of adults would panic (about).

Kameron's friend got in the house and unlocked the door. By the time they got to the elderly woman, she had fallen and was bleeding from the head. They later learned she also broke her hip.

The boys called 911 and waited with her until help arrived.

Chelsea Batchelor, Kameron's mom, said her grandmother has severe arthritis and is in the early stages of dementia. In a hot house, she became dizzy and nauseated.

"It's just amazing to me that he was able to stay calm and cool in the face of something that a lot of adults would panic (about)," Chelsea said.

"I think God sent me over there to do it," Kameron said.

The great-grandmother lives with her daughter, who was at work at the time. Had Kameron not stopped by when he did, it could have been a couple of hours before anyone found her.

The elderly woman is still in the hospital, and Kameron thinks she fell for a reason. Once she got to the hospital, doctors discovered she has a heart condition no one knew about.
