WEST JORDAN — A SWAT standoff ended Monday afternoon after police discovered the man they were trying to arrest was no longer in the residence they had surrounded.
West Jordan police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant to Albert Chavez, 38, at 1983 W. 7420 South Monday morning when they believed the man fled into his home and refused to come out.
Officers said they saw Chavez at about 8 a.m. outside the residence and he was believed to have been with a young child. They then saw Chavez enter the residence, said Sgt. Dan Roberts with the West Jordan Police.
When they knocked on the door, Chavez didn't answer and officers called for a SWAT team. SWAT members waited six hours outside the residence before they decided to move in.
The standoff ended when police entered the home at about 2 p.m. and found that Chavez was not there. He is believed to have exited the home before police arrived.
Chavez is suspected of aggravated sexual assault of a minor.
He was convicted of several misdemeanor counts of gambling and attempted gambling promotion in 2012. He was also charged with felony money laundering and racketeering, but both were dismissed, according to court records.
