ROOSEVELT — Duchesne County prosecutors have filed a felony charge against a Union High School teacher, accusing him of fondling a teenage girl.
Shawn V. Mitchell, 41, was charged Wednesday in 8th District Court with one count of forcible sex abuse, a second-degree felony. Prosecutors said the alleged fondling incident, which happened in October 2004, did not involve one of Mitchell's students or take place at Union High School.
Roosevelt police detective Pete Butcher said a woman came forward earlier this year and told investigators Mitchell fondled her when she was under the age of 18. Mitchell was interviewed by police and corroborated the woman's account of the incident, Butcher said.
Mitchell has been suspended from his job at Union High School, where he teaches art and coaches baseball, according to Bruce Guymon, director of student services for the Duchesne County School District. As of Wednesday night, district administrators were still working to determine whether the suspension would be with or without pay, Guymon said.
Mitchell has not been arrested, but a summons has been issued by a judge, ordering him to make his first court appearance April 25.
