OREM — All but one lane has reopened on U.S. Highway 189 after it was closed in both directions in Provo Canyon Friday due to a hazmat spill, officials said.
A driver was transporting a concrete form release agent, which is a substance that is designed to make concrete not stick to wood, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Lawrence Hopper. The driver did not secure the load and 160 gallons of the very slick substance spilled onto the road, Hopper said.
The left lane on the northbound side remained closed at Meadow Drive as of 3 p.m., but the other three lanes were reopened, according to Utah Department of Transportation officials. UDOT estimated the highway would be fully cleared by about 3:20 p.m.
