VERNAL — A man died and a woman was seriously injured after a shooting late Saturday night that officials are calling a domestic violence incident.

The shooting took place about 10:40 p.m. near 2425 W. 500 North in Vernal at an apartment complex called Canyon Villas, Uintah County Sheriff’s Department officials said on Facebook.

Witnesses said the incident started as a family fight between the man and woman in their home, officials said. The woman then ran from the home and was knocking on a neighbor’s door asking for help.

The man followed her and shot her multiple times with a handgun as the neighbor was opening the door, officials said.

The man then went back to his home, where sheriff’s deputies later found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The neighbor got the woman inside until law enforcement officials and medical personnel arrived.

She was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, officials said. She was later flown via a medical helicopter to a Salt Lake City hospital for further treatment.

Officials did not identify either person involved in the shooting.
