ST. GEORGE — Prosecutors say the teen accused of vandalism and bringing a bomb to school in Southern Utah was able to go under the radar for so long because he was able to do everything at home with supplies he already had.
Today, the 16-year-old was back in court for a hearing that could determine whether he will be tried as an adult.
The teen, whom KSL has chosen not to identify at this time, is accused of fashioning a makeshift explosive device and attempting to detonate it at Pine View High School in March. He is charged in 5th District Juvenile Court with attempted murder and using a weapon of mass destruction, first-degree felonies.
During the first day of a May preliminary hearing to determine if there was enough evidence to advance the case, a bomb expert testified the homemade device that started smoking from inside the student's backpack could have started a large fire but would not have exploded.
Prosecutors had several witnesses take the stand Monday. If the case moves forward, the state will likely ask the 16-year-old be charged as an adult.
